Getting Ready for Fluid Painting
Acrylic pour art is so fun to make because you can make interesting abstract designs that appear to flow like magic on your surface. We’ve put together a helpful tutorial for you that will show you the basics of creating pouring art that looks like the ocean or a beautiful web.
Our pre-mixed Pouring Acrylics are perfect for these projects because you won’t need to spend any time figuring out the right ratio of pouring medium. You can also find a variety of canvases in different sizes and styles, like panels or stretched canvases.
Before you start painting, you may want to consider protecting the surface you’ll be working on with a drop cloth and use something to elevate your surface. This will make cleaning up easier, and elevating your surface will allow the paint to flow freely off the sides so you won’t disrupt your painting. If you’d like to keep your hands clean, you may want to wear a pair of gloves as you work as well. Now, let’s start!
What You’ll Need to Get Started
- Pouring Acrylic Paint, 60ml Bottles - Set of 32:
- Canvas Panels, 9 x 12 in - Pack of 14 (22.9x30.5 cm):
- Several Threads of Medium Thickness, cut into 40-50 cm (15.7-19.6 in) strands
- Clean Paint Containers, (1-2 pcs.)
- Palette Knife
White Web Technique
Using this technique, we’ll be transforming a plain background into a web of colorful lines using some thread and our pouring acrylics.
Step 1
Cover the canvas completely with Titanium White. Pour the paint straight from the bottle, then spread the paint evenly with a palette knife. You can also tilt the canvas in different directions to help distribute the paint.
Step 2
Pour the other colors of paint you’ll be using for your painting into a separate container; a plate will work best. Make stripes of three different colors. We used Gold, Bronze and Metallic Wine Red.
Step 3
Dip thread into the paint in a zigzag pattern, then use the palette knife to press the thread and completely cover it in colored paint.
Step 4
Place the thread on the canvas, then pull it smoothly in one direction to create a unique line. Place a second thread parallel to the first one, then pull it in the opposite direction from the first stripe. First, pull one side then pull the other side to create different streaks with the string.
Step 5
Repeat the previous steps for the second element of the composition.
Step 6
Pour Mars Black into a second container and dip some thread into it. Place the painted thread on top of the first design & pull it along the same path.
Step 7
Repeat these steps on the canvas as many times as you like to create magnificent designs.
Acrylic Pour Art: Blue Wave Technique
This technique will have you catching waves in your art studio! You’ll be able to create interesting beachy vibes in just a few steps.
Step 1
Cover the canvas completely with Phthalo Blue by pouring the paint straight from the bottle onto your surface. Spread the paint evenly with a palette knife and tilt the canvas in all directions to help distribute the color.
Step 2
Pour Sea Green onto a palette, then dip the thick thread into the paint. Use your palette knife to completely cover it.
Step 3
Place the thread diagonally across the canvas with a slight bend. Pull the thread to the right and upwards.
Step 4
Fill a second container with Titanium White and dip a thinner thread into it.
Step 5
Add a white stripe directly from the bottle onto the canvas. Dip the thread you covered in white paint into the stripe. Pull it along the same path as the previous color.
Step 6
Dip another thread in white and repeat the technique at the top of the canvas.
Step 7
Tilt the canvas slightly to distribute the paint that’s currently on your surface.
Step 8
Add some Phthalo Blue to the composition then tilt the canvas slightly to distribute the color.
