Avatar Alien Halloween Face Paint Tutorial

Table of Contents:

Halloween is a time when people embrace their fears by dressing themselves as ghoulish monsters. The night becomes one of exciting frights and screams, but why not do something different this holiday season? Instead of spooking your friends, why not impress them with your awesome face painting skills? Become a legendary movie character!

ARTEZA® has you covered with a great design that will be sure to impress! Inspired by the infamous movie Avatar, the following steps produced by Cristina MonDragon will show you how to make yourself into one of the Na’vi that inhabits Pandora and get the signature Avatar face.

Our model starts off with a clean face.

Step One: Clean Face and Body

You’re going to be painting your face, neck, and shoulders, so make sure that you’re wearing a shirt suitable for this. If you have long hair, now is the time to tie it back and away from your face. Be sure that your skin is a blank, clean canvas ready for painting! Pick out the colors you will be using. For this Avatar makeup, you will need Blue, White, Black, Green, and Yellow.

Blue face paint is added to the model’s face, neck, and shoulders using a sponge applicator

Step Two: Apply Paint for a Blue Avatar Face

Using a sponge applicator, apply blue paint from our ARTEZA® Face Paint Kit cover the entirety of your face, neck, and shoulders. This will serve as the base of this creation, and assure that you are not mistaken for a human. After this, people will already start to see the resemblance to the Na’vi as you’ll have that signature Avatar face!

Starbursting lines are added in white on the model’s forehead, temples, and cheeks.

Step Three: Begin Applying Details with
UV Reactive Paint

Now use the white paint from our UV reactive paint kit to begin creating some details. Starting with the forehead, create vertical lines in the center accentuated by lines starbursting around the sides of the face. Work your way around the face, being sure to avoid the cheeks, leaving them a solid blue.

Yellow paint is added to the eyelids.

Step Four: Paint the Base for the Eyes

Now it’s time to add some other signature Na’vi details to your face paint! Gently apply the UV reactive yellow paint to the eyelids, stopping at the crease of the lid. This will be the base for the eyes and will provide a surreal look that will have people believing you can see into the heart of the Pandora forest.

Pink paint is added to the lips and around the nostrils and lips.

Step Five: Apply Paint to the Lips and Nose

Apply UV reactive pink paint to the lips as well as around the nostrils. This will give you more of the animalistic appearance that the Na’vi are known for. While our paint is non-toxic, be careful not to get it into your mouth -- we’re certain it wouldn’t taste very good!

Irises are drawn in black paint on top of the yellow on the eyes.

Step Six: Paint Pupils Onto the Eyes

Make sure the yellow paint on the eyes is dry, so you can add a bit more detail. Use a detail brush and less water as you add black face paint to fill in the pupils with a few details of the iris. The more life like the eyes on these eyelids are, the more life you bring to these Na’vi eyes.

Step Seven: Add Dots and Glitter to the Face

Returning to the white UV paint, it’s time to add some more details to the face. Use a round detail brush to add white dots around the lines drawn on the forehead and sides of the face. Take blue or white glitter -- or both! -- to add some sparkle to your design. Lightly moisten either your finger or a sponge to pick up Arteza Glitter and apply it to your face and neck. Be sure to limit the amount of moisture that’s used so as not to wash away the face paint.

Three green orbs are then added

Step Eight: Draw in the Necklace

Known for their esteemed friendships, the Na’vi wear what’s known as the Anurai necklace. This is passed on from friend to friend as a show of devotion, and this is what you’ll be painting next. Use the black paint to draw a line for the necklace around your neck. With the UV yellow paint, draw in a circle at the center of the black to create a pendant. Paint two smaller circles on either side of the pendant. Then add highlights to make the beads and pendants seem three dimensional!

Details are added to the painted eyes by edging them in black paint and adding eyelashes.

Step Nine: Add Details to the Eyes

Add more details to the eyes with black paint. Using the round brush, line the edges of the eyes to create a pronounced and defined effect. Here you can even add in some eyelashes to make this feature of the facepaint seem truly real.

Step Ten: Check for Coverage

With a UV light, check for coverage to make sure that your paint has been applied evenly and that everything is as defined as you need it to be. If you find that this is not the case, feel free to return to an earlier step to add some further details and finetune the look.

Step Eleven: Finished Product!

All done! This look will certainly impress all of your friends. Rather than screaming in fear, they’ll be screaming in delight and jealousy that they themselves didn’t decide to become the Na’vi for Halloween. With ARTEZA® face paints, your look will last for hours so you’ll be turning heads all night long. Now you’re free to walk amongst the trees of Pandora, or to win Best Costume at your next Halloween party!
