Erasers

Your artistic workflow and professionalism will reach a new level when you select the correct eraser. They're an important part of an artist's supply box. Working with quality erasers creates depth, contrast, and can help establish negative space. Whether you're an artist, designer, or mathematician, there's an eraser to meet your needs.

There are four basic types of erasers... They were each designed for different purposes. It's a good idea to familiarize yourself with: pink rubber, gum, vinyl, and kneaded erasers...

Pink Rubber erasers are what you see at the end of every school kid's pencil. They aren't recommended for artwork. Gum erasers are also known as Artgum® erasers. Their ability to absorb graphite is helpful in cleaning up large areas. They're designed to crumble in order to prevent the paper from tearing. Vinyl erasers are very effective but also tough on paper. When used in pencil or retractable form, they're very good for precise work. They’re useful for cleaning up ink. Kneaded erasers lift graphite, pigment, and charcoal from paper. You fold over the eraser to create a clean section.

What is the best eraser for a pencil?... Kneaded erasers work well with graphite and colored pencils, but there are other considerations. The best pencil eraser for artists is the one that meets the needs of the moment. You can work with more than one type in order to achieve the desired effect.

Rubber and vinyl erasers will often tear paper and can ruin your work in an instant. Softer kneaded or putty erasers are less likely to stress and tear the paper. Retractable erasers are the most popular type for correcting errors in small areas. They're commonly made from vinyl.

Kneaded erasers are the pro's choice for erasing colored pencils. They also do an outstanding job of creating depth without tearing paper. Kneaded erasers are good for not leaving particles. Avoid Gum erasers if you need a clean surface. The crumbling pieces can spread across the paper, picking up graphite in places that should have remained untouched. Vinyl and Gum erasers are the best choices for avoiding smudging and smearing.
