Watch & Paint with Gouache
One of my favorite ways to learn things is by watching videos on YouTube. I don’t know about you, but seeing someone else do the art I want to accomplish not only shows me the process but gives me more confidence to try. After all, if that artist can do it, so can I!
Here at Arteza, we want to give you that same feeling; that’s why we create how-to videos. For a medium like gouache that not everyone is familiar with, we believe it’s extra important to show you how it works and all the different things you can do with it. Here are our best YouTube videos using gouache to help you get inspired.
Our Top YouTube Tutorials
1. DIY Family Tree
Gouache paint has so many uses besides being a fine art medium. It’s perfect for home crafts because it’s opaque, but it can be thinned with water and used in many different ways. Best of all, clean up is a breeze with just soap and water. In this video, you’ll learn how to make your family tree to decorate your home or to give as a truly meaningful gift.
2. Metallic Deer Art
Metallic paint can intensify any subject. Here, see the way our artist applies gouache metallics on a black canvas to create this contemporary rendering of a deer in the woods. See how the metallic colors jump off the surface and how the artist uses it to create fine lines, shading, and filling in larger areas. I’m positive this one will get the creative juices going!
3. Realistic Cat Art
In this timelapse video, you’ll get to see how the artist creates soft effects mingled with fine detailing in gouache to achieve this realistic cat painting. I personally love videos showing really tight shots of actual brush strokes being used, and this video gives you that and more. If you’ve ever wondered how to make real-looking fur, this is a wonderful video for that.
4. Vibrant Chameleon Art
Ever wondered how artists mix colors to get just the right shades? Well here you’re going to see, up close, one artist’s process for color mixing on the palette and on the canvas. This painted chameleon demonstration takes you from the sketch to the finished painting showing you some great techniques including stippling, blending, and creation of shadows. You’ll also understand why so many artists are turning to gouache for the range of colors it comes in.
5. Christmas Decorations
Our artist uses gouache paint for this stunning painting of an assortment of her most treasured Christmas ornaments. Using these vibrant colors, she’s able to show you how to use the paint either straight from the tube or mixed together, and how to create depth through layering and interest with fine detailing. Along the way, you’ll get little tips and by the end have a great understanding of the capabilities of this medium.
6. Gouache Demonstration
In this demonstration, the artist begins by showing you a sample of every color in our Premium Gouache Paint Set of 24. She goes on to lead you through the process of painting a portrait beginning with her initial sketch, then begins painting the background, building the colors of the face and adding highlights, creating depth and dimension to the clothing, and finishing with the fine details. A great video to paint along with!
7. Tips & Techniques for Beginners
This is truly a short course in gouache painting. Starting with how to make the initial sketch, this step-by-step video has everything a beginner needs to know. You’ll learn which brushes to use, how to mix colors, and all about painting clouds, trees, and flowers. This follow-along tutorial, geared toward newbie artists, is full of tips and techniques for painting a stunning landscape.
8. Mountains
This is one of the most inspired ideas I’ve seen for using metallic gouache paint. Instead of using a traditional paintbrush, the artist uses stencils and rolls the paint onto a black surface to create a mystical mountain range. She continues to enhance the scene by creating unique textures through the use of either a sponge, crinkled paper dipped in paint, or by splattering the paint with the edge of the brush and her fingernail. You’ll see her demonstrate two mountain paintings using these creative techniques, with step-by-step instructions along the way.
Wow! I don’t know about you, but after reviewing these videos I can hardly wait to grab a brush and pull out my gouache paints! All of these videos would make great at-home projects that are sure to uplift your spirit to start a new artmaking practice. Let me know which one you’re going to try.
